where we talk about awesome shit and you reply with some intelligent and witty comments
I'm not so sure. They've clearly been watching Ong Bak etc. (fair enough), but what that makes Ong Bak awesome is BONE-CRUNCHINGLY REALISTIC ACTION whereas as this came across more CAREFULLY CHOREOGRAPHED AND PERFORMED SAFELY AND SKILLFULLY.
ReplyDeleteThen again it did have a couple of fucking awesome moments, and I like this guy's hair. If the film entire has less of the Ong Bak vibe it could be pretty good.
I said something similar in the Twitch comment thread. I don't see the Ong Bak influence as much as the Jackie Chan one, but they've clearly seen a bunch of great fu flicks and learned from them.
ReplyDeleteBut there are definitely a few moments where I felt you could see an extra beat built in that made it feel more like a dance than a fight, or just like a film made by people who've never made a fu flick before.
Hopefully they'll work better in context/have insert closeups to cover them in the editing process the way HK directors have learned to do. Trailer is clearly all master shots.
