Invertebrates are the new moe

I suppose it was inevitable for moe characters to literally become spineless.

(Incidentally, Karas was better than I expected, considering it's about a comatose animist Power Ranger who can transform into the Batmobile)

Anyway. Bakemonogatari seems pretty good so far, through episode 4. SHAFT is a very hit-and-miss studio for me, but so far Shinbo's visual tics remain in the "stylish" zone, as opposed to Soultaker Incoherence. It's kind of coming off like a remake of Mushishi in contemporary drag, with more T&A, but maybe that's because the main dude's hair keeps blocking one of his eyes. I am sort of wondering if the whole series is just going to be "semi-hapless dude exorcises cursee of the week, adds to harem"; I'd like to know just how low I should be setting my expectations.

Also, did they get Hajime "Invader Q-Ko, FLCL manga" Ueda to do the art for ep 4's ending? That's random.

  1. Ueda's scatchings are all over Faust. Don't think he's ever directly illustrated anything of Nisio's, but he's in the club.

I would also like to sternly come out against the Mayoi opening, which seems to have the moe fans in fits, but which I considered one of the more painful noises to have ever punctured my ears.

  2. Actually, I'm surprised it took anime this long to start fetishing snails, considering that they're hermaphroditic and prone to stabbing their sex partners.

Please don't tell me if some sicko has already immortalized this via doujinshi.

  3. The motif felt familiar. Some sicko like Konaka or something has probably been on that band wagon for years, and simply done it as horror rather than moe.
Or maybe I'm just thinking of a couple of Patricia Highsmith short stories that scared me off her books forever.

  4. There are snail people aplenty in Uzumaki, though obviously not there for adorable laughs. The chapter introducing them has freaked my shit out for years.

  5. I would not be surprised if Shintaro Kago has made some story/strip about snails and sex.
