Scientific Railgun 01

I continue to have a soft spot for this series. The front half was overloaded with a shitload of underage lesbian groping that mostly managed to be sort of grating, but it picked up in the second half, with a decent action set piece.
They have their work cut out for them making the main character's combat anything like as interesting as her obnoxious teleporting co-star, but I dig the setting, they've kept the same production design, and it continues to be a rare case of a show being better than what it means to be.

  1. Yes yes, nice Railgun whatever, now go watch Seitokai no Ichizon. If you're lucky it will be just as popular as Lucky Star, and you could be the one with the honour to translate the original light novels for an international audience!

  2. The first episode of Railgun left me bored out of my mind. At least Index was watchable. We badly need an Accelerator spin-off.

  3. Railgun is definitely a step down from the main series.

I have already been warned against Seitokai no Ichizon.

  4. I started reading Seitokai no Ichizon but I had to stop before too long because it was making me angry. I don't even know why I progressed beyond the front cover, the generic otaku fantasy girl drawn in an ugly art style tells you all you need to know about the book.

And it really does read like a incredibly shitty Nishio Ishin. From what I remember of the beginning the author was almost certainly trying to imitate his style, except with more cute exclamation points.

  5. Watched the first two eps the other day. I think watching this so soon after the last couple eps of Bakemonogatari kind of overloaded me on creepy fanservice-presented-comedically. The high concept is still a winner, but in practice this show is headed somewhere very bad, very fast.

  6. There's a reason I didn't talk about the second episode. It sort of tipped the balance from "Hey, awesome teleporting fu...and some awkward underage sex humor" to only the latter. Without the action to balance it out, it's just skeevy.
