Isao Takahata directing Taketori Monogatari

The absurdly late hours I'm keeping have their benefits, as I managed to browse past a few news sites reporting that Studio Ghibli's better half, Isao Takahata, is finally making another film. Every bit as brilliant a director as Miyazaki, Takahata hasn't made a film since the criminally great My Neighbors the Yamadas ten years ago.
Taketori Monogatari/The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is one of the more famous Japanese legends -- it's sort of hard to watch much anime without tripping over the thing. After all, they have a god damn holiday about it.
A baby found in the woods who turns out to be a princess from the moon sounds like exactly the sort of material Studio Ghibli excels at.

  1. My heart aches for the perpetually-shelved US release of Only Yesterday.
