A search on Amazon Japan reveals that there is still only four volumes -- the same amount of material released in each of Del Rey's two-volume omnibus. Either this is a very disappointing error, or there is some exceptionally odd deal where North American audiences are receiving material not yet published nor collected in Japan.

I remain deeply suspicious of solicitations that far in advance of the usual. Gosick volume 2 is also up somewhere, but I'll believe it when it comes out.
ReplyDeleteThen again, they could well know something we don't know; Kodansha could list their November releases next month and have two more volumes done straight to tankobon. Stranger things have happened. Some moe series Tokyopop did just did that exact same thing after a four year silence.
I'm incredibly skeptical, too, though the date also falls in line with other expected releases (for instance, Moyashimon being released every four months).
ReplyDeleteThe advanced solicitations for other companies are just as bizarre; the sixth volume of that Karin/Chibi Vampire novel is listed on Amazon, as well.
How far in advance do these companies currently solicit things through online vendors? I haven't been keeping up with that sort of data.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure I did finish translating the sixth volume of Karin, so that's just as likely to pop out as Gosick 2. I just don't know anyone there to find out.
This is just a guess, but I imagine that they cover up to nine months for some publishers -- that seems consistent for whenever surprise licenses/releases by Viz have been revealed in the past.
ReplyDeleteProbably Del Rey just getting our hopes up. If new material magically appears, I won't be complaining.
ReplyDeleteHuh. Very interesting find, David. Boy do I ever hope that this isn't -- as you put it -- a "very disappointing error." It does have an ISBN and everything listed on Amazon, so ... maybe.
ReplyDeleteIiiinteresting. I braved 2ch to see if they knew anything (no) but they were all talking about his other series ENDING.
ReplyDeleteSo now that he's not wasting his time drawing horribly unfunny gag manga...maybe he has time to come back and finish Me and the Devil Blues. Slightly more optimistic.
